“Xavi’s Transfer Gamble: Should Barcelona Chase This Manchester United Striker?”

Joe Lee

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona is interested in signing Manchester United forward Anthony Martial. The Catalan club is said to be interested in signing the French attacker, who has a deal expiring at Old Trafford.

Martial’s Difficult Campaign At Old Trafford

Martial has endured a tough season at the Mancunian club as he has struggled to be consistent for them in front of the opponent’s goal. The French talent has only managed to score one goal and secure one assist in six matches for Man United in the previous campaign across multiple competitions.

The 27-year-old has made most of his appearances off the bench but has done well to average 0.4 shots, 1.0 key passes and 0.2 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Premier League. However, he has been accurate with his ball distribution in the final third after completing 89.1% of his attempted passes in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).

His current contract at Old Trafford will run out at the end of this campaign. Hence, it makes sense for Barcelona to sign Martial on a free transfer next summer.

Should Barcelona Boss Xavi Move In For Martial?

Martial can create a yard of space for himself to get a few strikes in on-target. He has got the pace to make a few dangerous runs with the ball when he is playing regularly and with confidence on the pitch. Martial is primarily a centre-forward but can also play as a winger on either flank if needed.

The French talent has lacked confidence under the stewardship of Erik ten Hag this season. Hence, he might welcome an opportunity to join Barcelona as a free agent next summer.

Martial could be a shrewd pick-up for the Catalan club as they look to add more firepower to their attack. At 27, the Frenchman is about to enter his prime soon and could help Barca challenge across all fronts over the next few years.

With all things considered, Xavi should focus on moving in for Martial at the end of this campaign. He is good enough to be a success story at the Nou Camp if the Barcelona head coach can unlock the best out of him.
