“Tottenham’s South American Transfer Hunt Heats Up: Who’s the Mystery Defender?”

Tottenham Hotspur are allegedly interested in signing Club America defender Sebastian Caceres, 24, according to Mexican sports publication Record.

Spurs are looking to improve their defensive options, particularly in central defence. Ange Postecoglou’s men have made a strong start to the 2023/24 season, sitting atop the Premier League with a total of 23 points.

They feel that bringing Caceres to the club would be an excellent way to improve their backline – even if the pair of Micky Van de Ven and Cristian Romero have been doing a stellar job thus far.

Tottenham are not alone in their pursuit of Caceres. Recently, Football Insider reported that Manchester United, Newcastle United, Fulham and West Ham United are also interested in the player.

On top of this, Record’s report also mentions that Brazilian club Flamengo could also put forth an effort for the player. Therefore, if Spurs want to land the Uruguayan international, they must fend off some stern competition.

Do Tottenham need defensive reinforcements?

In the middle of defence, Spurs can currently call upon Cristian Romero, Micky Van de Ven, Eric Dier and Ashley Phillips. Of these four, Phillips is just 18 years of age – and Dier is out of contract in the summer of 2024

They can also play Ben Davies at centre-back, but he struggles to function effectively outside of a back three – something that Postecoglou does not utilise, preferring to employ a 4-2-3-1 formation.

As such, it would benefit the squad to bring in a centre-back who is ready to slot into the first team. Signing Caceres would be a fantastic way to do this – even if he is somewhat diminutive to be playing in a back two at just 5ft 11. His contract at Club America is set to expire on December 31st, 2024 – if Spurs can afford to wait that long, they could snap him up for free.
