Tottenham Hotspur’s perfect start to the season continued on Friday as they defeated Crystal Palace 2-1 to take a five-point lead atop the Premier League.

In an equal first half, Ange Postecoglou’s team was matched by London rivals Palace; nevertheless, just after the interval, they gained the lead thanks to an own goal from Joel Ward.

After 66 minutes, Spurs captain Son Heung-min scored his eighth league goal of the year to basically secure the victory. The visitors were then in complete control until Jordan Ayew scored for Palace in stoppage time.

Both goals were assisted by James Maddison, a former Leicester City player who once again performed admirably for the visitors.

Tottenham’s eighth win from 10 games put them on 26 points — their best start to a top-flight season since 1960-61. They are five points clear of champions Manchester City and Arsenal, who have yet to play this weekend.

Shot-shy Palace are in 11th place with 12 points.
