“Sensational Son: Fifth Player of the Match Win!”

After helping us defeat Newcastle United handily, Heung-Min Son was voted the HSBC Player of the Match by our supporters. He added one goal and assisted on two more.

Following the game, Sonny took part in an exclusive poll on our official app, garnering 46% of the vote and winning his fifth Player of the Match award of the season.

Starting on the left of our front three with the returning Richarlison through the middle, our captain put in a vintage display to twice bamboozle former teammate Kieran Trippier down the left flank to set up Destiny Udogie’s first competitive Spurs goal and for Richy to double our lead before the Brazilian, who finished second in the vote, combined with Pedro Porro, who ended third, to make it 3-0 on the hour mark.

The South Korea international looked back to his dynamic best with his direct dribbling and pace causing havoc for the Newcastle backline, typified when he raced onto Pedro’s defence-splitting pass on 85 minutes to beat Martin Dubravka to the ball before being brought down by the Toon goalkeeper to win our first penalty this term. Sonny duly stepped up from 12 yards and, after a slight stutter to his run up, fired the ball low into the bottom left corner to make it 4-0 with the away side grabbing a late consolation.

That spot kick was the attacker’s 10th Premier League goal in 2023/24 – only Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah have more – becoming just our second player to hit double figures in eight successive league seasons alongside former striker Harry Kane who achieved this feat across nine.
