Manchester United fans have been left disappointed by the lineup picked by Erik ten Hag to play Burnley following a recent injury build-up.

Manchester United fans have rushed to social media to express their displeasure after viewing Erik ten Hag’s starting XI for the match against Burnley.

The Red Devils head to Turf Moor without a number of high-profile players due to injuries, including Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez, and Mason Mount. Former club captain Harry Maguire is also missing from the squad after suffering an injury last week.

With Shaw and Martinez out, Ten Hag has resorted to Jonny Evans and Sergio Reguilon, two summer signings. Many Old Trafford supporters are dissatisfied with the team’s current situation, despite the fact that the club has spent heavily in the transfer market over the previous two years.

Evans will be partnered in the heart of United’s defence by Victor Lindelof, with Diogo Dalot filling the right-back position. Hannibal Mejbri and Scott McTominay, who were both linked with summer moves, have both been given starts as United return to a midfield diamond formation.

One fan made it clear that they were less than impressed with the team by posting: “Worst lineup i’ve seen in my lifetime”. Another branded the selection as an: “Embarrassing and disgraceful lineup”.

Others made light-hearted comments in reference to the inclusion of Evans, who left Old Trafford back in 2015 before being brought back this summer as a free agent. One user quipped: “Which year are we in?”, with another adding: “Evans in 2023” with several unimpressed emojis.

Speaking before the match, Ten Hag made it clear that injuries have led to an opening for Evans, who amassed just shy of 200 appearances during his first stint at Old Trafford. Martinez is absent after injuring his foot against Arsenal prior to the international break.

Defending his team selection, Ten Hag told TNT Sports: “Martinez is injured, another one. He had an issue in the spring but he’s suffered another one. We have to do it with the player available to us, that’s ultimately it.

“Just be together, focus on the right things. Don’t get distracted, focus on the way of playing, the rules, the principles. Follow the game plan, stick together. Help each other, communication, it’s about all of those things’

“It’s about doing their job – we’ve conceded a lot and we are totally aware of it. The players have to do their jobs so match the runs, go with them. Don’t gamble in an early moment.”
