Man Utd took on Crystal Palace in the third round of the Carabao Cup
Dean Henderson, a former Manchester United custodian, earned compassion from his old Old Trafford teammates after being pulled off less than 20 minutes into Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup match.
The 26-year-old sustained an injury during United’s Carabao Cup match at home against Crystal Palace and was replaced by Sam Johnstone. Henderson departed United for Selhurst Park last month at an estimated £20 million.
Henderson appeared visibly upset by his latest injury setback after missing out on the second half of the 2022-23 season due to an injury suffered during his loan spell at Nottingham Forest.
As he walked off the pitch, he was hugged by former United teammate Anthony Martial, and Facundo Pellistri gave him a high five. Henderson made his first appearance for Palace since leaving Manchester United.
Henderson remarked of his time at United after leaving: “This club is everything to me.” I went away when I was 14 years old to pursue my ambition of playing for Manchester United, and happily, I was successful. So that’s something I’ll always treasure and bring with me wherever I go.
“I’ve been a fan since I was a young boy.” I’ve worked my way up through the ranks and adore the club. Obviously, there have been some highs and lows, but I have wonderful memories here and am relieved to be departing on good terms.
“I think looking back, obviously pulling the shirt on for the first time, away at Luton in the cup. I think that was my debut actually, and that was such a special moment. It was probably a week after that… it didn’t really sink in that I’d actually managed to achieve it. As I say, growing up as a young boy, it’s all I ever wanted and to do that, I’m really pleased.”
United took the lead swiftly after Henderson was forced off with Alejandro Garnacho opening the scoring before Casemiro added a second before the half-hour mark.
