Legendary Rockets Forward Robert Reid Passes Away at 68, A Tribute to His Remarkable Legacy

Robert Reid, a former player for the Houston Rockets, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 68.

Reid’s memorial photo and a note honouring his time with the Rockets were shared on X.

In the 1977 NBA Draft, Reid was chosen 40th overall by the Rockets. During his ten years on the team, the St. Mary’s graduate averaged 11.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 46.7% shooting from the field

In 1980–81, Reid had his greatest year in terms of statistics. For a Houston club that went all the way to the NBA Finals, the 6’8″ swingman started all 82 games. With Moses Malone (27.8 ppg) and Calvin Murphy (16.7 ppg), the two franchise icons, he was third on the team with 15.9 points per game.

During the 1982–83 season, Reid famously left the squad for religious concerns. After making a comeback the next year, he spent five more seasons as a Rocket.

Magic Johnson, the legendary player for the Los Angeles Lakers who joined the NBA a few seasons after Reid, expressed his sorrow over the passing of his buddy and opponent on the floor.

Before retiring in 1991, Reid had short spells with the Philadelphia 76ers, Portland Trail Blazers, and Charlotte Hornets.
