FC Bayern's Winning Mentality: Insights from Gareth Southgate on Harry Kane and Eric Dier

Harry Kane, the captain of England and a long-term target for Bayern Munich, was acquired from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer for a club record €95 million. Undoubtedly, despite the high expectations placed on him, Kane has exceeded all expectations in his first season in Bavaria, shattering multiple records.

But after an injury-plagued Hinrunde under Der Rekordmeister, the team was forced to look for reinforcement during the winter transfer window. Bayern chose Eric Dier, a countryman of Kane, over Radu Drăgușin, who strangely signed with Tottenham, despite interest in the former.

This resulted in the reunion of the former England and Spurs teammates and made them the third and fourth English players to play for the record champions, following Owen Hargreaves and Omar Richards.

As a result, the Bundesliga has gotten much more attention in England—especially since Kane joined the team. Gareth Southgate, the manager of the England National Team, has also been watching the Bundesliga as two of the country’s best players are currently playing in Germany.

Regarding Dier’s relocation to the Allianz Arena, Southgate spoke the following with Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany: “I did not talk to Eric. Still, it’s a wise decision on his part. Football’s Bayern Munich is an amazing team. Fantastic past. one of the biggest football teams in the world. Thus, Eric sees it as a fantastic opportunity. He is a truly wonderful man. He has played a significant role in our group’s journey. We sincerely hope that works out well for him.

Regarding Kane, Southgate said: “He’s having fun with it,” We haven’t attended a lot of the live games. But we follow every one of his games. Seeing the Bundesliga at this level is encouraging. You are under pressure, of course. Playing for a team like FC Bayern means that you have to win each and every week. So Harry will benefit from this.

Prior to choosing the team that he brings to Germany, Southgate will be weighing his options as EURO 2024 draws near. Dier will be looking to regain his place in the England team with some strong performances for Bayern, even though Kane will undoubtedly be among the first players in his squad.

Dier has made an impression for the Rekordmeister thus far, but it will be challenging to make sure he plays a regular part for Thomas Tuchel’s team. Kim Min-jae will soon return from Asian Cup duty, and Dayot Upamecano is expected to recover from injury before the match against Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday. This means that the Englishman will need to make an impression if he wants to push his way into Tuchel’s starting lineup.
