As per Edu Velasco Jr on El Chiringuito TV Barcelona target Nico Williams is going to renew his contract with Athletic Club.
Williams, 21, has a contract with the Basque country club until 2024 and since he has not penned a new deal so far, Barcelona have reportedly expressed interest in signing him for free.
What’s the situation right now?
Nothing is known about Williams’ future at the time.
As previously reported, the Catalan team has been monitoring the 21-year-old for months, and contacts have already been formed.
There have been rumours that Real Madrid are interested in signing the 21-year-old Spanish international, and that he would prefer a transfer to the Santiago Bernabeu over a move to Barcelona.
But, Nico Williams is said to be enjoying his life at Athletic Club and if reports are to be believed, he is leaning towards a potential renewal.
Nico would be giving up a lot to renew with Athletic
As far as his renewal with Athletic Club is concerned, MARCA reports that if he opts to sign a new deal, he would be giving up a good chunk of money.
Indeed, Williams is on the radars of several clubs in England who could give him a lucrative contract while Barcelona and Real Madrid could also be able to offer him better terms than Athletic Club.
The Basque country club and Williams have engaged in ongoing conversations regarding the terms of a short-term contract extension for quite some time.
And the reality is that the most attractive renewal proposal from Athletic Club would fall significantly short of what the Spaniard could get elsewhere.
But, as things stand, it appears that Nico Williams is going to sign a new contract with Ernesto Valverde’s side, which would be a blow to Barcelona’s hopes of signing him for free.
