“Atletico Madrid’s Bold Move: Targeting Barcelona’s Marcos Alonso for a Powerhouse Transfer!”

Alonso is currently in his second campaign at Camp Nou having made the switch from Chelsea in 2022. The 32-year-old has proven to be a valuable option to Xavi and the Catalan giants in general, partly due to his relatively low wages in comparison to the rest of the squad.

Alonso has also appeared in 20 replacement appearances and 24 starts across all competitions, where he has played left back, his more well-known position, or center back.

But with Alejandro Balde at his disposal, Xavi does not view Alonso as his first choice, and it is unlikely that he will in the future.

In principle, as Barcelona moves through a transitional phase, keeping Alonso on board would make sense from a financial and experience standpoint.

Conversely, though, because of the well-known financial problems and the lower salary cap for 2024–25, club management will need to figure out how to make savings.

Atletico has reportedly been keeping an eye on the situation and has already indicated interest in signing Alonso, according to Football Transfers.

According to the source, Atletico is willing to offer Alonso a one-year deal in order to maintain him among the best players in Spain and Europe.

With Samuel Lino, Saul Niguez, Rodrigo Riquelme, and Javi Galan among their many possibilities at left wing-back, Atletico has plenty of options.

It looks like Diego Simeone will find it challenging for Alonso to establish himself on the team because he has so many options while playing in a back three.

Nevertheless, Atletico may theoretically save money on salaries if they sign Alonso and part with another player.

As things stand, Alonso is allowed to discuss a pre-contract deal with international teams in January; this seems plausible given that Barcelona is purportedly not interested in exercising a 12-month option in his contract.
