Arsenal are apparently set to step up their pursuit of Barcelona’s Sergio Busquets successor in January.

Mikel Arteta spent a lot of money on players like Kai Havertz, Declan Rice, Jurrien Timber, and David Raya during the summer transfer window.

Arsenal have made a good start to the Premier League season, remaining undefeated and sitting second, two points behind champions Tottenham Hotspur.

Arsenal are reportedly close to completing a deal to capture Belgian star Arthur Vermeeren ahead of the January transfer window.

According to Spanish news agency SPORT, Arsenal might complete the move during the January transfer window, dealing a major blow to Barcelona manager Xavi.

According to reports, Xavi chose Vermeeren as a significant target because of his resemblance to Busquets, who went to join Lionel Messi at MLS club Inter Miami in the summer

According to the source, the Emirates club is optimistic that the 18-year-old can adjust to Premier League football and is willing to spend €15 million for his services.

Vermeeren broke through to the first time at Belgian outfit Royal Antwerp and has made 53 appearances for the club.

Royal Antwerp’s director of football and former Arsenal man Marc Overmars to FCBN: “I do not have doubts that Vermeeren can play [for] Barca. Like Xavi and Iniesta… Vermeeren [has] the same profile.”

Whilst teammate Toby Alderweireld said: “He arrived in the team by force of circumstance, but since then he has learned very quickly.

“He reads the game very well, his potential is enormous. Have I seen this before? Rarely, I think.”
